Does student loan debt affect immigration to Canada?
Posted on August 22nd, 2010 2 commentsHallie E asked:
My older brother is looking to immigrate to Canada, but has few grand in student loans- nothing serious, he makes small monthly payments, he’s not having to eat ramen or anything. However, I know that Canada requires a person to have a chunk of savings (apparently, enough to live off of for a year, I think they want you to have roughly $10,000) but I heard that if you have debt, you have to have enough savings to completely cover paying it off. Anyone know about this? Thanks!!

How do I get out of college loan debt?
Posted on July 29th, 2010 6 comments~~~ asked:
I have $30,000 of student loans. I am in grad school and still have one year to go. My field, library sciences, does not guarantee work, especially in this economy. I am training to be an EMT basic. This pays $15 per hour to start. I dont want to take out any more loans but I fear that I might have to in order to keep my other loans in deferrment. I live in my own apartment and don’t have parents to move back in with.

Will applying for (and receiving) a debt-consolidation loan damage my credit?

I have numerous debts (car payments, student loans, a few credit cards, and a signifcant personal debt owed to a friend) that I’d like to roll into one monthly payment (which would hopefully be smaller than the amount I currently pay for each one as a separate monthly bill). Some people have advised me to apply for a debt-consolidation loan. My question is, will doing so affect my credit negatively? Do they even include student loans in debt-consolidation?

If I put all of my student loan debt on a credit card, could I cancel this out by declaring bankruptcy?
Posted on February 10th, 2010 2 commentsmigueljuan asked:
I currently owe $45,000 in student loans and I am having a hard time paying them off. The loans are private (sallie mae) and I am not elligible for consolidating them via federal loans since I am not a US citizen. I was not able to get a visa so I had to leave the US. I live in Europe now.I understand that declaring bankruptcy would not cancel out the student loans, but I have read that bankruptcy could cancel out credit card debt. I have a good credit score (790), so given some time, with an even higher credit score, I may be able to transfer my loans to a few credit cards.
What are the laws regarding credit card debt and bankruptcy? What difference does it make that I am not a US citizen and do not live in the US?

How to be forgiven student loan debt?
Posted on January 11th, 2010 7 commentsCantGetThereFromHere asked:
If you’ve already consolidated your student loans and no matter how many years you pay, the interest addition never makes the balance go down, is there any way to be forgiven this loan debt?
Please help. I’m past middle age, a social worker, and these student loans make me think that taking the gas pipe is the only solution to get out from under.

What is the fastest way to get rid of student loan debt?
Posted on December 8th, 2009 3 commentsUbiquitous asked:
I’m paying off a lot of credit card debt and currently have my student loans in a deferral status. But the big monthly payments will start up again at the end of this year.Aside from trying to “drop off the radar screen” or looking for a much better-paying job that would quickly burn me out, I’m curious if anybody has any leads on this matter.
Thanks!
PS: Don’t recommend declaring bankruptcy because student loan debt is exempt from that.

Is it wrong to fund retirement and investments while I still have student loan debt?
Posted on November 18th, 2009 5 commentsRob A asked:
I have student loan debt with pretty low interest rates (5% and 3% respectively). Is it better to put extra money toward paying off the student loans quicker or putting that extra money into an IRA and/or good mutual funds which would ideally earn a higher interest rates than the loans?
